Ready to Achieve: Top tips for upcoming senior school NCEA derived grades examinations

Rolleston College derived grade examinations will take place from Friday 23 August to Friday 30 August.

This is a very important week for our senior learners and it is vital they prepare adequately. Should a learner be unable to sit their NCEA examinations in November, these derived grade examinations will be used to derive a grade for them. They are also a timely snapshot of where learners can make further progress before the end of the year.

During this week, all senior learners will be on ‘study leave’ and normal classes will not be running. Learners are required onsite for their exam (it is compulsory to attend) and outside of their exams, they may study from home. Studying at home between exams is essential to ensure they are well prepared for their examinations. Learners are encouraged to view the school day as per normal from 8:45am to 3pm, however noting that the exam session times are approximately 9am to 12pm and 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Learners will be supported with a study guide and study timetable next term.

Five weeks until derived grade exams begin – top tips on how to best prepare!

For year 13 students, this term marks just over 12 weeks left of secondary school classes. For all levels, there are only five weeks until derived grade exams. Preparing for these exams is crucial to achieving your personal best. Here are some effective study tips:

  • If you haven’t already, create your dedicated study space at home.

  • Create your study timetable. Study towards exams should begin NOW. Small and regular study is more beneficial than cramming days before the exam.

  • Practice past papers – ask your teacher where you can access these. You can find past digital external assessments on the NZQA website.

  • Your Ako and Advisory coaches will be sharing study guides – be sure to engage with these.

  • Learners should, where possible, avoid picking up extra work shifts at night/weekend during this time.

In the spotlight: 2, 3, 5, 7 study technique

This well-structured strategy of spaced repetition is scientifically proven to improve your memory and learning. Learners can fight the forgetting curve and make sure that knowledge stays in their long-term memory by planning review meetings to happen at set times.
