We are blessed with four great high schools in the area and see an importance of coming together for the betterment of all; we save the competition for the sports arena.
Today was book character day, and I commend all of those learners and staff who dressed up as different book characters and in particular Mrs Gallacher for organising the day, and her strong commitment to the learning of literacy—and, along with the lovely Julia Mountford—to the school library. At Ngahuru and Hōtoke celebrations today I shared the following quote from Stephen King whilst speaking about the importance of reading not just for school or for work but for pleasure: “Books are a uniquely portable magic."
Next week, we have learners sitting the literacy and numeracy common assessment exams. For many, exams can seem like a daunting experience. As a student I always preferred them to internal assessments as I was better at last minute studying/cramming hard for an exam rather than engaging in the sustained effort of internal assessment. We are all different.
We are trying hard to reinforce the message that an exam is just one way of finding out what you know at a point in time about a specific thing or where your skill level sits in an area at a snapshot in time. A positive aspect of these exams is that they can be sat on multiple different occasions before the conclusion of high school. It would be great to share those messages at home too.
Finally, good luck to all of our sports teams competing over the weekend; those engaged in Grease rehearsals; and those competing in the CentreStage Rolleston Illuminate competition. We are lucky to have so many opportunities in our area to engage in the things we love.
